Cruise Hacks You Need to Know Before Your First Sailing
If you’re planning a cruise and it’s your first time, there are a few insider tricks that can save you money, time, and stress. After years of cruising (and learning the hard way on some of these), I’ve pulled together my top 7 cruise hacks that will have you cruising like a seasoned pro.
Pack Smart & Stay Organized
Packing cubes are your best friend, they keep everything under control and easy to access instead of searching and trying to remember where you pack everything.
Also consider a small carry-on with the essentials. Think swimsuit, medications, travel documents, and anything you’d hate to be without, if your luggage arrived later in the evening to your cabin.
Use Simple Cabin Hacks to Create More Space
Cruise cabins are relatively small so you want to make the most out of the space that you have:
- Magnetic hooks (most walls are metal!)
- Over-the-door bathroom organizer for your toiletries
- A nightlight sensor so you’re not bumping into furniture in the middle of the night
These small adjustments make your cabin feel less cramped and more like a peaceful organized space.
Pack the Little Tech Helpers
Pack a cruise-approved, non-surge power strip to keep everything charged and ready. Some ships, especially the older ones, have limited outlets and if you have multiple people in your cabin, access to an outlet will be limited. Also consider a portable small white noise machine if you normally use one, to mask distracting noises.
Stay Protected
A refillable water bottle for staying hydrated, comfy sandals/shoes for days at port and sunscreen to avoid getting burned. These tiny additions will make your cruise smoother.
Book Smart
Booking early usually gets you the best price and the most cabin choices. Consider booking at least a year to get the best value.
Bring Your Own Drinks (When Allowed)
Most cruise lines let you bring one bottle of wine or champagne per adult, plus a few non-alcoholic drinks. Just check your cruise line’s rules so you don’t accidentally pack anything they’ll take at the port.
Don’t Skip the Travel Agent
A good travel advisor (hi!) will guide you every step of the way. In fact, travel advisors often find deals, and/or onboard credits you wouldn’t get on your own. Plus, if anything goes sideways, delays, cancellations, questions you don’t have to fight those battles alone.
Conclusion
Cruising is meant to be relaxing, fun, and full of memories but a few smart hacks can make all the difference. From packing cubes and magnetic hooks to sunscreen, a water bottle, and comfortable shoes, these tips help you save time, stay comfortable and enjoy every moment of your vacation.
