11 Things to Do Right After Booking Your Cruise

Booking your first cruise is exciting but only the first step. There are some important tasks you want to make sure you complete  because skipping them after booking could cost you money, time and possibly be denied on the ship. I’ve put together a list of 11 important things you need to do after booking your cruise.

Review your booking confirmation

Whether you booked online or through a trusted travel advisor, errors can happen. Make sure your name matches your ID or Passport, double check the sailing date, cabin and dining time. Fixing mistakes now will be easier than discovering it last minute or at the port.

Check Passport and Travel documents Requirements

For closed-loop cruises (starting and ending at the same U.S. port), you may only need a birth certificate and photo ID. But I always recommend bringing a passport, you never know if an emergency requires flying home from a foreign port.

If you’re traveling with children who have a different last name,or you recently changed your name, additional documentation may be required. Requirements can change, so double-check early to avoid surprises.

Research flights and Hotel Stays

Book flights and hotels early to avoid high prices closer to departure. Also consider flying at least a day early. When booking a hotel look for one that offers shuttle service to the port or airport and is near restaurants and the port for an easy morning departure.

Request time off work

Don’t wait until the last minute to request time off from work. If your time off isn’t approved after you’ve already paid in full you could risk losing your refund.

Set Reminders for Deadlines

Mark your Calendar for final payment dates, cancellation cutoffs and check in dates. This will avoid losing out on money even your cruise entirely

Buy Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance protects your investment and peace of mind. If your flight gets canceled, you get hurt or sick on the ship, even if your luggage gets lost, travel insurance will protect you. Look for coverage that includes preexisting conditions if needed and keep in mind policies have a limited window to purchase after booking your cruise. Don’t wait until the last minute.

Join a Facebook Group

Find a Facebook group with your exact cruise ship and date. These communities are great for asking questions, meeting people who will be on your ship and learning about unofficial meetups. Many cruisers, even myself, find these groups incredibly helpful.

Conclusion

Booking your cruise is just the beginning of an amazing adventure. By following these 7 steps, you’ll save yourself time, money, and unnecessary stress, and set yourself up for a smooth, enjoyable vacation.
